Chaarana Labs partnered with the Government of Haryana to turn Kalpana Chawla’s life story into a hands-on AR experience for a Women’s Day celebration — a physical AR booth letting visitors, especially children and families, trace her journey from Karnal to NASA through interactive 3D scenes.

Three Milestones, Three Mats

The experience is built around three milestones in Chawla’s life — her roots in Haryana, her dream of spaceflight, and her astronaut legacy. Each milestone lives on its own physical mat, doubling as both a storytelling prop and an AR tracking marker: a map of Haryana, an Earth-from-space view, and a map of the USA.

Design Approach

• The Haryana map mat shows a small astronaut figure and a paper airplane, evoking early ambition and first steps
• The USA map mat features a large 3D space shuttle and NASA logo to convey the scale of her achievement
• The Earth-view mat reveals a framed AR portrait of Chawla surrounded by soft particle effects

Built for Public, Walk-Up Audiences

The team custom-built and optimized 3D assets for smooth tablet performance, prioritizing reliability and ease of use for public audiences, plus robustness against inconsistent real-world lighting and fast, responsive marker detection.
